Worked example: a student's ball flight shows a consistent pull with the path approaching from outside. A coach assuming 'tight' muscles loads the program with stretching. The screen, however, shows full thoracic rotation when tested in a seated, supported position, but noticeably less rotation when the player must rotate standing and control the rest of the body. The better decision is to recognize the difference between available range and usable range: the deficit is in control under demand, so motor-control and stability work, possibly with technique adjustments to sequencing, takes priority over chasing more range.
Why it matters: adding range to a player who cannot control the range they have can make a pattern worse, because the new mobility arrives without the stability to organize it. This scenario sharpens a distinction worth memorizing for its own sake: mobility problems show up as restricted range in supported, isolated positions, while stability problems show up as range that disappears when the task gets more complex. Pair up with a training partner and run one full loop: screen, swing observation, written correlation, and a re-check observation. Score yourself against a rubric focused on process, not on the partner's athleticism.
Setup: choose a partner, a safe open space, and paper or a simple form. Run a movement screen of your own design covering rotation, pelvic control, balance, and overhead reach, recording each result in plain language.
