Free relief for abnormal course conditions such as casual water, ground under repair, or certain animal holes requires actual interference, meaning the condition physically affects stance, swing, or the lie of the ball. A condition that merely bothers the player, or sits between ball and hole without touching any of the three elements, does not qualify. Confusing the two produces a wrong answer in both directions.
Worked scenario: a player's ball lies against a cart path, and the follow-through would strike the path. The apprentice suggests free relief because 'the path is in the way of the swing.' The better decision: confirm interference with stance or swing area, take one club-length relief from the nearest point of complete relief, no nearer the hole, at no penalty. Contrast this with a ball deep in a bush: no free option exists, and the player either plays it, takes unplayable relief for a stroke, or returns under stroke and distance. Practice by listing, for five written situations, whether relief is free, one stroke, or unavailable, and check each against the interference test.
Ball flight diagnosis: separate face from path before prescribing
Modern ball flight teaching treats the face as the dominant influence on starting direction and the face-to-path relationship as the driver of curvature. Diagnose both before suggesting any change to grip, path, or setup.
A shot that starts right of the target and curves farther right points to a face that is open relative to the swing path, with the path itself possibly close to the target line. A shot that starts left then curves right suggests a path moving left with the face open to it. The correction differs in each case: the first is primarily a face-control problem, the second involves both path direction and face relationship. Jumping straight to 'swing more to the right' or 'strengthen your grip' without reading start line and curvature applies a fix to the wrong variable.
Worked scenario: a beginner reports a slice. The apprentice's first suggestion is to rotate the hands stronger, a common shortcut. The better decision is to observe where the ball starts relative to the target line, then where it curves, then where contact occurred on the face. If the ball starts at the target and bends right, path is likely fine and face control at impact is the priority; if it starts well right and flies straight, aim or alignment may be the whole problem. Why it matters: face-first prescriptions given to an alignment problem can create a new miss, and the beginner loses trust in the correction.
