FlightScope units typically require a minimum of 8 feet of distance from the radar to the tee for accurate club tracking, and a minimum of 8 feet of ball flight to the net or screen. Placing the radar 8 feet back maximizes the available space while safely exceeding the minimum requirements for both club and ball tracking. The other options either place the radar too close to the tee or restrict the ball flight window too severely.

For a ball to start right and curve right, the Face Angle must be open to the target line, and the Face Angle must be open to the Club Path. A Face Angle of +4.0 and a Path of +1.0 creates a Face-to-Path of +3.0 (face open to path), producing the push-slice. Italicized data in FlightScope software indicates that the parameter is being calculated or estimated rather than directly measured. Indoors, radar systems need a metallic sticker on the ball to directly measure spin rate due to the short flight distance. Applying the sticker and aligning it properly allows the radar to capture the exact spin decay and provide measured, non-italicized data.

A negative Angle of Attack with a driver increases Spin Loft, which creates excessive backspin and reduces the Smash Factor, robbing the player of distance. By hitting up on the ball (positive Angle of Attack), the player decreases Spin Loft, which lowers spin and maximizes energy transfer. The other options would either increase spin further or fail to optimize the launch conditions for a 95 mph swing speed.

Smash Factor is a measure of energy transfer from the clubhead to the golf ball, calculated by dividing Ball Speed by Club Speed. Due to USGA limitations on the Coefficient of Restitution (COR) and Characteristic Time (CT) of clubfaces, the theoretical maximum for a driver is approximately 1.50. The Face to Path is calculated by subtracting the Club Path from the Face Angle (-1.0 – (-3.0) = +2.0). Because the face is open relative to the path (a positive value), it creates a positive Spin Axis, causing the ball to curve to the right for a right-handed golfer. The ball will start slightly left (due to the -1.0 face) and fade back to the right.

If the radar is pointed to the left of the actual target line, it establishes its internal zero-degree line to the left. Consequently, shots hit straight down the actual target line will be read by the radar as launching to the right (positive Launch Direction). Proper physical alignment or utilizing the software’s alignment tool is necessary to correct this baseline.

When a ball is struck on the toe, the clubhead twists open around its center of gravity, causing the ball to slide across the face and impart a hook (negative) spin axis. This is known as the horizontal gear effect. FlightScope’s radar tracks the actual flight of the ball, so it will accurately display the leftward curve caused by the gear effect, even if the measured club delivery suggested a fade.

Roll Distance is heavily influenced by the ball’s descent angle and backspin rate upon landing. A shallower descent angle (like 35 degrees) combined with lower spin allows the ball to bound forward and roll out further. A steep descent angle (50 degrees) with high spin will cause the ball to stop quickly, producing minimal roll.

Dynamic Loft is the actual loft presented to the golf ball at the moment of impact. It is influenced by the club’s static loft, shaft flex, shaft lean, angle of attack, and where the ball is struck on the face. It is distinct from Launch Angle, which is the trajectory of the ball itself, and static loft, which is the club’s resting measurement.

If club speed and angle of attack are consistent but launch and spin vary wildly, the player is likely striking the ball at different heights on the clubface. Striking higher on the face increases launch angle and lowers spin (due to vertical gear effect), while striking lower decreases launch and increases spin. FlightScope accurately captures these outcome variances caused by strike location.

For a properly struck iron shot, the club should be descending through impact, meaning the lowest point of the swing arc occurs after the ball has been struck. FlightScope displays this as a positive number or an ‘A’ (After), correlating with a negative Angle of Attack. A low point before the ball (‘B’) would result in hitting the ground early (a chunk) or hitting up on the ball (a thin shot).

A negative Launch Angle in putting means the ball is being driven downward into the putting surface, which causes it to bounce and skid, leading to poor distance control. To fix this, the coach needs to help the player deliver more Dynamic Loft at impact (often by reducing forward shaft lean). A slightly positive launch angle is required to lift the ball out of its depression on the green.

In an optimal golf swing, the clubhead should be accelerating continuously until the moment of impact. If the Acceleration Profile shows deceleration before impact, it usually means the player has released their lag (wrist angles) too early, causing the club to reach maximum speed prior to hitting the ball. This results in a significant loss of potential club speed and distance.

A flashing red battery indicator signifies that the internal battery is critically low. FlightScope units can be powered externally via a compatible USB power bank, allowing the operator to charge the device while continuing the lesson. Factory resets or moving the unit will not solve a depleted battery issue.

Spin Loft is the angle created between the Dynamic Loft and the Angle of Attack. It is a vital metric for fitters because a higher Spin Loft generates more backspin and reduces Smash Factor (compression), while a lower Spin Loft reduces spin and increases Smash Factor. Managing Spin Loft is the key to optimizing a player’s distance and trajectory.

FlightScope software features specific modes (like Chipping or Pitching) that adjust the radar’s tracking algorithms to look for slower club speeds, lower ball speeds, and shorter flight windows. If standard full-swing mode is left on, the radar may ignore the slow, short movements of a chip shot, treating them as practice swings. Metallic stickers are only required for indoor spin measurement, not outdoor tracking.

The Vertical Swing Plane (V-Plane) represents the steepness or shallowness of the clubhead’s path as it approaches and exits the impact zone. A lower number indicates a flatter, more shallow swing (typical of a driver), while a higher number indicates a steeper, more upright swing (typical of a wedge). It is purely a measurement of the clubhead’s geometric path, not body angles or ball trajectory.
