Trackman Level 1 Certification

A push-draw starts to the right of the target line and curves back to the left. For the ball to start right, the Face Angle must be positive (open to the target). For the ball to curve left, the Face to Path must be negative (face closed relative to the path), meaning the Club Path must be further to the right (+4.0) than the Face Angle (+2.0).

Smash Factor is mathematically calculated by dividing ball speed by clubhead speed. In this scenario, 160 mph divided by 108 mph yields a Smash Factor of approximately 1.48. This value is a direct indicator of how efficiently energy is transferred from the club to the ball during impact.

The Spin Axis dictates the horizontal curvature of the golf ball in flight. A negative spin axis tilts to the left and creates a draw or hook, while a positive spin axis tilts to the right and creates a fade or slice. Face to Path influences the Spin Axis, but the Spin Axis itself is the actual aerodynamic parameter causing the curve.

Spin Rate is heavily influenced by Spin Loft, which is the angle between the Dynamic Loft and the Attack Angle. Increasing the Spin Loft—either by adding Dynamic Loft or steepening the Attack Angle—creates more friction and a more glancing blow, thereby increasing the spin rate. The other options would either reduce spin or have no direct effect on it.

For optimal radar tracking of both the club delivery and the full ball flight, the Trackman unit must be placed approximately 9 to 10 feet directly behind the golf ball. It must be perfectly aligned with the target line to establish an accurate zero-degree baseline. Placing the unit offset or in front of the ball will severely compromise data accuracy.

Face to Path is calculated by subtracting the Club Path from the Face Angle (+1.0 minus +3.0 equals -2.0). A negative Face to Path means the clubface is closed relative to the path at impact. For a right-handed golfer, this closed relationship tilts the spin axis to the left, resulting in a draw bias.

The Normalization feature mathematically removes the negative effects of poor weather, high altitude, or low-quality range balls. It recalculates the ball flight to show what the shot would have done with a premium golf ball in standard environmental conditions (e.g., 77 degrees Fahrenheit at sea level). This provides the most accurate reflection of the player’s true on-course distances.

Hitting down on a driver (a negative Attack Angle) increases Spin Loft, which subsequently increases backspin and lowers the initial launch angle. To maximize driver distance, players generally need high launch and low spin, which is best achieved with a positive (upward) Attack Angle. Therefore, a -4.0 degree attack angle severely limits distance potential.

Spin Loft is the three-dimensional angle formed between the direction the clubhead is moving (Attack Angle/Club Path) and the orientation of the clubface (Dynamic Loft/Face Angle) at impact. In a simplified 2D vertical view, it is the difference between Dynamic Loft and Attack Angle. This parameter is the primary driver of the ball’s spin rate.

When the ball strikes the toe of the club, the clubhead twists open around its center of gravity, causing the ball to slide across the face toward the center. This friction imparts gear effect, which tilts the spin axis to the left (for a right-handed player) and induces a draw. Additionally, off-center strikes result in lower energy transfer, thereby reducing ball speed.

The Low Point parameter measures where the lowest point of the clubhead’s arc occurs relative to the golf ball. An indicator of ‘B’ means Behind the ball, while ‘A’ means After the ball. Therefore, ‘4 B’ means the club bottomed out 4 inches before making contact with the ball, typically resulting in a ‘fat’ or ‘chunked’ shot.

The initial launch direction of a golf ball is heavily dictated by where the clubface is pointing at impact. Trackman data proves that the Face Angle accounts for roughly 75% to 85% of the starting line, while the Club Path accounts for the remaining 15% to 25%. The exact ratio varies slightly depending on the club’s loft, but Face Angle is always the dominant factor.

Trackman 4’s Dual Radar Technology separates the tracking responsibilities to maximize precision. One ultra-high-frequency radar focuses entirely on the clubhead’s macro and micro movements through the impact zone. The second radar tracks the golf ball from launch until it lands, capturing its exact trajectory and spin profile.

Swing Direction refers to the angle of the bottom of the swing plane relative to the target line, representing the general hula-hoop orientation of the swing. Club Path, however, is the precise instantaneous horizontal direction the clubhead is traveling at the exact moment of maximum compression. A player can have a rightward Swing Direction but a leftward Club Path if they strike the ball late enough in the arc.

When Face Angle and Club Path are both zeroed out (0.0), a center strike will produce a perfectly straight shot. If the ball fades under these parameters, it is due to an off-center strike on the heel. The heel strike causes the clubhead to twist, creating a gear effect that tilts the spin axis to the right, producing a fade.

Stopping power on a green is dictated by a combination of Spin Rate and Landing Angle (the angle at which the ball descends into the ground). If the spin rate is already acceptable, a shallow Landing Angle will cause the ball to bounce forward and roll out. Increasing the maximum height (Apex) will steepen the Landing Angle, allowing the ball to stop faster.

Dynamic Lie is the angle of the shaft relative to the ground at impact. If the toe is pointing down (and the heel is up), the clubface effectively points further to the right of its actual face angle for a right-handed player. This tilts the spin axis to the right, causing the ball to start right and fade.

Trackman officially measures Club Speed at the geometric center of the clubhead, immediately before the club makes contact with the golf ball. It does not measure speed at the toe or heel, nor does it measure it during the deceleration phase of impact. This ensures a standardized measurement of the club’s maximum velocity delivery.

The Trackman Optimizer is a software tool that analyzes a player’s current Club Speed and Attack Angle to map out their theoretical maximum distance potential. It shows the ideal Launch Angle, Spin Rate, and Height required to achieve that maximum distance, giving the fitter a clear target for equipment adjustments.

Dynamic Loft is the amount of loft on the clubface at the exact moment of impact (maximum compression), measured relative to the vertical plane. It differs from static loft because shaft lean, face angle, and strike location all alter the loft delivered to the ball. This parameter directly influences the initial launch angle of the golf shot.
